“According to a study carried out by the organizations that make up the Union of Unions, with data from the Food Chain Observatory, the average that the farmer receives compared to what the final consumer pays for agricultural products is 30%, but in the case of oranges and mandarins the situation “is much worse”, since in the former the average is 16% and in the case of clementines it is only 12%.
Given these figures, the Unió de Llauradors denounced on World Food Day the “serious dysfunctions” that exist in the food chain. The organization stressed that intermediaries keep an average of 30% of oranges and tangerines and the remaining 56% at the destination.
Along these lines, the organization wanted to highlight "the dramatic situation that citrus producers are experiencing, threatened by trade concessions to third countries, where products such as oranges or clementines do not receive even 15% at origin."
La Unió also points out the negative effect that the "imbalance" of forces in the food chain has "to the detriment of the weakest link, the producer" which "is also aggravated by international political issues that use agriculture and livestock as currency", such as the imposition of tariffs by the US in retaliation for the Airbus case, the EU-Mercosur agreement or with other third countries such as South Africa or the Maghreb - Morocco or Tunisia, among others–.”
